Food for all
Offering free food, personal chef services, cooking classes, workshops, YouTube, and more
Our mission is to feed people, as well as promote education, cultivate skills,
and provide resources to improve food security, access, and sovereignty.
Food security
Kukucachew LLC collects food that would have otherwise gone to waste. We prepare / cook it (following food safety standards) into ready-to-eat-meals to offer free food to anyone. Chicago is a city that is cold for the majority of the year, yet SNAP benefits have limitations on obtaining hot food. We have future goals of providing hot meals through mobile pop-up programs. We also transform food to extend its shelf life into other snacks and items (e.g., corn tortillas into chips, oranges into marmalade).
Food access
Kukucachew LLC currently distributes this ready-to-eat food to Love Fridges. We have goals of expanding to mobile food pantry programs and / or high traffic areas (e.g., train stations) and partnering with other programs to help expand food access.
Food sovereignty
While we love offering food for free because food is a human right, this is only a bandaid solution. If you feed someone a fish, you feed them for a day. If you teach someone to fish, you feed them for a lifetime. Therefore, Kukucachew LLC offers cooking classes and workshops through a sliding scale / pay-it-forward model so that people can learn how to be more self-sufficient, self-reliant, and have more control over their food production, acquisition, and preparation. We rely on a Robin Hood / Pay-It-Forward business model by offering some services (e.g., personal chef services) to those who can afford it to supplement offering other services (e.g., free food, cooking classes, workshops, YouTube videos) to those who can’t. We focus on education around skills, techniques, scrap / waste utilization, sustainability, and production (e.g., sprouts, fermentation, edible insects).
Our ultimate goal is to have a community food space (like Chicago Tool Library) dedicated to food-specific equipment / tools where people can come, eat, take classes, borrow or rent equipment / tools, and nerd out about food :) We need more third-spaces that don’t require spending money to foster community. This dream will take some time to manifest, but it’s good to have goals, right?
